Day Thirty. At Work.

At Work

A bunch of reporters, learning about Census 2010.

Day Twenty Nine. The Mother Ship.

Another Mother Ship

Len set up this little tableau. I think it looks a bit like the Mother Ship landed (the picture is titled Another Mother Ship because I took one on Wednesday. I like this one better.)

Day Twenty Eight. Question.

Question

These question marks appeared all over campus this summer (as well as the word Who?). I don't know what they mean, but I find them kind of funny (if overly permanent).

Day Twenty Five. Queen Anne's Lace.

Queen Anne's Lace

Day Twenty Four. Mission Falls Yarn

Mission Falls Yarn

I love Mission Falls yarn. It's so soft and cushy, and it's a machine washable 100% wool. This is now a baby hat.

Day Twenty Three. Spanish Tortilla.

Spanish Tortilla

This is what you have if it is 8:00 PM and you didn't take anything out of the freezer and you are drowning in eggs. Also, this is what you take a picture of if you didn't take any other pictures. Basically this is eggs, potatoes, onions and olive oil. It was ok. It needed more flavor (garlic), but this was a fast, easy, and not-so-bad-for-you dinner. Maybe not the best picture, though.

Day Twenty Two. Hillbilly Style.

Traditional Hillbilly Style

This summer I found a really cool old Mountain Dew bottle for my Dew addict brother. Later I was out done by Len's sister, who found this one. The awesome cannot be denied.

Day Nineteen. Fall is Photogenic.

Fall is Photogenic

Day Eighteen. Brussels Sprouts.

Brussel Sprouts

My dad, who did the cooking, hates Brussels Sprouts so we never had them when I was a kid. I love them. He also hates cooked spinach but loves it raw, I'm the opposite. Go figure.

Day Seventeen. Continental.

Edited to add: Len thinks this is from 1962 or 1963.

Continental

This was kind of lucky, I almost didn't have a picture for Saturday either. This lovely old boat is parked outside of my sister's apartment. To me, it marks the transition from the automobile's heyday of design (pre-1973) to it's low point in the 1980's. Len will know the year, but my guess is 1975ish?

Day Sixteen. Cheating.

Orange and Red

I don't remember why, but I didn't actually take a picture on Friday. This is from Thursday. I had taken the shoe picture, which was the picture I had intended for that day, then I got home and saw this leaf lying picturesquely on our porch. So I took that picture, too.

Day Fourteen. Stairs.

Stairs

I love the shape of staircases, especially when they are on the outside of a building.

Day Thirteen. Orange Barrels

Orange Barrels

Ann Arbor is buried in orange barrels, which makes navigating the town rather difficult. I like this better in the large size, more detail shows up.

Day Twelve. I shouldn't love this picture

But I do.

Mum

You know what is in focus in this picture? The dirt on my lens. But I can't help it, the lack of focus looks deliberate, soft and romantic. Like me!

Stop laughing.

Day Eleven. Eggshell.

Better view of Day Eight.

Day Ten. Len.

Day Nine. Lauren.

Lauren

This one doesn't look very good in color, but desaturated and with a touch of sepia it looks a little better.

Day Eight. Today's Lame Picture

Today's Lame Picture

Not so much a lame idea as badly executed. We occasionally find discarded nests in the yard, I pulled this one off the shelf and discovered I had stuck a broken robin's egg in it. Maybe I'll try this one again with better light.

Day Seven. Tying Dad's Quilt.

Tying Dad's Quilt

When we were kids, our dad went through a sewing phase. I got a couple of blouses and a dress out it, and I think all of us got a quilt. I still have mine (I'm very sentimental that way), because it wasn't quilted or tied it has fallen apart a few times. This time I added a second border so it will fit on our bed, and I'm tying it so maybe it will stay together for a few more years.

Day Five. Fall Leaf.

Fall Leaf

Strange as it seems, I find taking pictures of fall colors really hard. Either the pictures are so cliche they are uninteresting, or they are just uninteresting. So I'm kind of surprised this one works for me. It was a little windy yesterday evening, but I think the light was just bright enough that I could get a fast shutter speed. The aperture was wide open (f/2.7), thus a very narrow field of focus. It was a happy mistake that I got the most interesting part in focus, it could just as easily been the tip of the leaf, which wouldn't have been as pretty.

How We Can Tell it is Fall

Judy

Birch

Birch Tree

There were two other pictures in the running for day three (this one and this one). I went with the birch because I like the perspective.

Day Two. Apple

Apple

Day One

10-01-2009

Not the best picture I've ever taken. This is the Institute for Social Research, where I work. The building was done in 1965, and as a whole it is pretty dated looking (here is an aerial). It is interesting in pieces, though.

I know it is possible

But can I take a picture every day for a year? We shall see.
